Music Matters 2019 was a fun and successful two-day affair which featured speaker, John Atkinson, Editor of Stereophile magazine, and showcased leading industry brands Bowers & Wilkins, Focal, McIntosh, Qobuz, Chord Electronics, Technics, VPI and more. This year's event featured Denver-based artist, John Vogl, whose work captured the spirit of live music. We caught up with John via phone to learn more about him and how he came up with the design for the Music Matters 2019 artwork. John Vogl is a freelance illustrator living in Minneapolis, MN. His work is a mix of digital and traditional illustration, with a focus on evocative detail with a graphic sensibility. He works on a variety of commercial, gallery, and personal projects. His dog, Loki, is not very useful as a studio assistant, but still very sweet and cute.

John Vogl
First things first, how John end up in Denver?

I grew up in St. Louis, MO and left my hometown to attend Drake University in Iowa and my passion for illustrating continued to grow. I moved back to St. Louis after school and worked in a letterpress shop and a couple different ad firms, all while freelancing on the side. About 9 years ago I moved to Denver and experienced a layoff that really spurred my freelancing work and after that, I pursued freelance illustrating full-time.

What did you think of the ListenUp Denver Showroom and were there any products that stood out to you?
I was able to get a tour from Phil Murray, and I was really blown away by the quality of the products. We saw everything from Focal bookshelf speakers to the high-end floor speaker that really stood out because of the exceptional sound.
What was your inspiration for the Music Matters artwork?
My idea was to do something that was open concept and to really encompass listening to music and the aspects of enjoying music, as well as ListenUp's ability to recreate the live music experience. I pulled inspiration from some Blue Note album covers, and I also wanted to incorporate the fact that ListenUp has a big vinyl component. The artwork came out really well and Im really happy with how it looks.
A big congratulations to our grand-prize winners Carson Haney, and David Castor who each took home a pair of AudioQuest NightHawk Carbon headphones!
