A Window Coverings Specialist’s Perspective

Lighting and window coverings play a major role in how a home looks, feels, and functions. But until you experience them in person, it can be difficult to fully understand the impact of professionally designed lighting control and automated window coverings.

ListenUp Window Coverings Specialist Deeds Haska recently visited the Lutron NYC Residential Experience Center in Manhattan. What she discovered was not a traditional showroom, but a fully immersive residential environment that demonstrates how Lutron lighting systems, motorized shades, and smart home integration work together seamlessly.

A Residential Lighting and Shading Experience, Not a Showroom

Located inside the New York Design Center, also known as the D and D Building, the Lutron NYC Residential Experience Center spans 2,400 square feet and is designed as a luxury townhome. Visitors walk through fully realized living spaces including a kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom.

“The space feels like an upscale New York City residence,” Deeds shared. “All of the technology is hidden. You do not walk in thinking it is a showroom. You feel like you are in someone’s home.”

This residential approach allows homeowners, designers, and integrators to see how smart lighting systems and automated shades function naturally within a living environment.

Seeing Automated Shades and Lighting in Person Changes Everything

One of the most valuable aspects of the experience is the ability to see and touch materials. Instead of browsing sample books, visitors can explore Lutron shade fabrics, hem bars, and hardware displayed with integrated lighting.

Deeds noted that the fabric displays felt welcoming and intuitive, making it easier for homeowners to visualize how window coverings would actually look in their own space. Hands-on shade displays also showed construction details like brackets and mounting, which are often overlooked but play a major role in both aesthetics and performance.

Motorized Drapery That Elevates Design and Function

A standout feature of the experience center was Lutron’s motorized drapery systems. In one space, recessed ceiling tracks were used to divide rooms, showing how drapery can function as both a design element and a practical solution.

Deeds explained that motorized drapery can be used to complement roller shades, create full blackout without adding another shade, or add softness and texture to a space. This flexibility makes motorized drapery an ideal solution for open floor plans, modern homes, and multi-use rooms.

“Motorized drapery adds both function and softness in a way people don’t expect.”

Lighting Design That Supports Wellness and Daily Routines

Lighting demonstrations using Lutron Ketra lighting showed how lighting can mimic natural daylight throughout the day. The space transitioned from complete darkness to bright midday light, even on a cloudy New York afternoon. This experience illustrated how lighting and window coverings can work together to support circadian rhythms, improve mood, and enhance comfort from morning to night.

Lighting can also be personalized around daily routines. For example, if you want your under-cabinet kitchen lighting to turn on as you arrive home from work each evening, it can be programmed to automatically illuminate at a set time, such as 6:00 p.m., creating a welcoming and functional space without any extra effort.

Small Lighting and Shading Details That Make a Big Impact

Layered window treatments were another key takeaway. In the bedroom, roller shades were paired with drapery and integrated soffit lighting to create depth, warmth, and visual interest.

Deeds also noted features such as side channels for blackout shades, whisper-quiet motors, and thoughtfully designed keypads. These small details elevate lighting and shading from functional elements to intentional design features.

Smart Home Automation Made Simple

Automation was seamlessly integrated throughout the experience center. Everything was controlled through programmed scenes, keypads, or intuitive features like tug-activated drapery.

“Nothing felt complicated. Everything worked with the touch of a button or a simple movement,” Deeds shared.

This ease of use is a major benefit for homeowners considering smart lighting control and automated window treatments.

Why Professional Lighting and Shading Design Is Worth The Money

For homeowners questioning the value of professional lighting and shading design, Deeds points to the everyday impact.

“When I upgraded to automated shades in my own home, it completely changed how the space felt, the quality, the light control, and the automation made my home feel entirely new,” she said.

Professional lighting and shading solutions improve energy efficiency, UV protection, comfort, and usability, especially in dedicated spaces like home theaters, media rooms, and listening rooms.

When asked to describe the Lutron NYC Residential Experience Center in one sentence, Deeds did not hesitate.

“Classy and high-end.”
