The framing is up, the walls are open, and every pathway through your home is completely accessible. This is your window to do smart home wiring the right way, and once the drywall closes, that window is gone.

Getting this phase right is one of the best investments a homeowner can make. Getting it wrong means years of workarounds, visible cable runs, weak Wi-Fi, and systems that never quite work the way you imagined. This guide walks you through everything you need to know before the walls close up.

Why Wireless Alone Is Not Enough

The first thing most people say when they start planning a smart home is, "Can't everything just be wireless?" It's a fair question. Wi-Fi is everywhere, Bluetooth is convenient, and the idea of running cable through walls sounds like extra work. But if you want a home that genuinely performs, wireless alone will let you down in five critical ways.

Reliability

Wireless signals are invisible, and so are the problems that disrupt them. A neighbor's network, a baby monitor, a microwave, even the wrong building materials can degrade your connection. Wired connections don't have that problem. When a device is plugged in, it stays connected, full stop.

Speed

Wi-Fi speeds are shared across every device on the network at once. A wired Ethernet connection gives each device its own dedicated bandwidth. For 4K streaming, video conferencing, large file transfers, and whole-home audio, that difference matters enormously.

Interference

Wireless interference is cumulative. The more devices you add to a home, the more crowded the radio spectrum gets. Smart home electrical wiring sidesteps this entirely by moving high-bandwidth and mission-critical connections off the airwaves.

Security

Wired networks are physically harder to penetrate than wireless ones. For security cameras, access control systems, and smart locks, a wired connection is far more resistant to interception or jamming than anything transmitted over the air.

Serviceability

When a wired connection has a problem, you can trace it, test it, and fix it. Wireless issues are often invisible and hard to diagnose. A well-documented wired infrastructure is a home that a technician can actually service efficiently for years to come.

The Essential Wiring Checklist

A solid home automation installation starts with the right cables in the right places. Here is what should be on every prewire checklist.

Cat6 or Cat6A

This is the backbone of your home network installation. Cat6 supports gigabit speeds up to 100 meters, and Cat6A extends that to 10 gigabit speeds over the same distance. Run it everywhere you might ever want a wired connection, and then run it in a few more places you haven't thought of yet. The cable itself is inexpensive. The labor to add it later is not.

Fiber Where Appropriate

For long runs, between buildings, or in environments with electrical interference, fiber optic cable is the right call. It's immune to electromagnetic interference and can carry data over much longer distances without signal loss. If you have a detached garage, a pool house, or a large property, fiber deserves a serious look.

Speaker Wire

In-wall and in-ceiling speaker wire needs to go in before drywall, and the gauge matters. Heavier gauge wire (like 14 AWG) handles longer runs and higher-power speakers better. Think through every room where you might want music, then add the spaces you aren't sure about. Running wire to a room you never use costs almost nothing. Adding it later costs significantly more.

Coax

Even in a streaming-first home, coaxial cable still has its place. Antenna feeds, some cable systems, and certain distribution architectures still rely on coax. Run it to living rooms, bedrooms, and any room where a television might ever live.

Security and Camera Wiring

IP cameras typically run on Cat6 with Power over Ethernet (PoE), which means a single cable carries both data and power. Plan every camera location carefully and run dedicated cables back to a central location. For traditional analog or hybrid systems, the wiring requirements may differ, but the principle is the same: hardwired cameras are more reliable, more secure, and offer better image quality than wireless alternatives.

Shade Power and Control Wiring

Motorized shades are one of the most transformative elements in a smart home, and they require power and, in many systems, control wiring at each window. This has to be coordinated with your electrician before the walls close. Retrofitting powered shades into finished walls is a serious challenge.

Lighting Control Wiring

Smart lighting systems often require neutral wires at every switch location, which older homes frequently lack. Some systems also require home-run wiring back to a central processor rather than standard loop wiring. Getting this coordinated early with your electrical team is essential for a clean home automation installation.

Doorbell, Gate, and Access Control Wiring

Video doorbells, gate intercoms, and keypad access systems all need dedicated wiring. Plan for low-voltage runs from each entry point back to a central location where a controller or display can be mounted.

Where to Run Network Connections

One of the most common regrets homeowners have after moving in is not having enough network drops in the right places. As part of your home network cable installation, make sure to include:

  • Televisions: Every TV location should have at least one Cat6 drop. Even if you plan to use the TV's built-in Wi-Fi, a wired connection will always perform better for 4K and 8K content.
  • Offices and Work Areas: Home offices deserve multiple Cat6 drops. A dedicated wired connection for your computer, a separate one for a VoIP phone or video conferencing system, and a spare make sense for any serious workspace.
  • Wireless Access Points: This is the one most people overlook. Your wireless access points need to be wired back to your network switch for best performance. Plan access point locations first, then run Cat6 to each one from your equipment location.
  • Cameras: As noted above, PoE cameras need Cat6 runs to each camera position.
  • Control Panels and Touchscreens: Any wall-mounted control surface for lighting, audio, or home automation needs both power and a data connection.
  • Equipment Racks: Your central rack or closet needs a high concentration of infrastructure. Plan for conduit, power, cooling, and multiple network drops here.
  • Outdoor Entertainment Areas: Patios, pool decks, and outdoor kitchens benefit from weatherproof network drops and speaker wire just as much as interior spaces.

Planning for Whole-House Audio

Whole-home audio is one of the most satisfying parts of a smart home done well, and it requires careful planning during the prewire phase.

Speaker Placement

In-ceiling and in-wall speakers need to be placed before drywall, which means you need to know the listening position, the room dimensions, and the acoustic goals before a single hole is cut. A good rule of thumb is to position ceiling speakers at a consistent height and angle them toward the primary listening area.

Volume Control Versus Centralized Systems

Older distributed audio systems used passive volume controls at each room. Modern systems use centralized amplifiers with digital signal distribution. The wiring approach differs significantly between these two architectures, so your audio strategy needs to be decided before wires are pulled.

Indoor and Outdoor Zones

Each audio zone, whether it's a bedroom, a great room, a covered patio, or a pool area, needs its own speaker wire run. Outdoor speaker wire should be rated for direct burial or in-wall use and protected appropriately from moisture.

Amplifier Location

Centralized amplifiers live in your equipment rack or closet. All speaker wire runs should home-run back to this central location for the cleanest installation and easiest serviceability.

Centralized Versus Local Equipment

In a centralized system, all the processing happens in one location and audio is distributed to speakers. In a local equipment setup, each room has its own amplifier or streaming device. Both approaches have merit, and the right answer depends on your priorities, budget, and how many zones you want.

Why Conduit Is Inexpensive Insurance

Here is a piece of advice that pays for itself many times over: run conduit in strategic locations, especially in finished areas and between floors.

Conduit is simply a protective tube that cable runs through. If you ever need to upgrade from Cat6 to Cat6A, add fiber, or replace a damaged cable, conduit lets you pull new wire through without touching the walls. In slab construction, conduit is even more critical because there is no way to re-route cables after the concrete is poured.

The cost of conduit during construction is minimal. The cost of not having it when you need to upgrade in five years is substantial.

Common Prewire Mistakes

Even well-intentioned construction teams make these mistakes. Knowing them in advance helps you avoid them.

Too Few Access Point Locations

One wireless access point is almost never enough for a whole home. Most properly designed home networks require multiple access points, each wired back to the central switch. Underestimating the number of access point locations is the single most common cause of dead zones and poor Wi-Fi performance.

Equipment Rack Without Ventilation

Network switches, routers, amplifiers, and processors generate heat. A rack crammed into a closet with no airflow will overheat, causing performance issues and premature equipment failure. Plan for ventilation from the very beginning.

No Spare Wire

Running a single wire to each location and calling it done is a false economy. Wires get damaged, connections fail, and needs change. Running one or two extra cables to key locations costs pennies during construction and could save you a significant headache later.

No Documentation

Once the walls are closed, the infrastructure inside them becomes invisible. Without a clear record of what was run, where it goes, and how it's labeled, future troubleshooting and upgrades become guesswork. Good documentation is part of a professional home network installation.

Electrician Determining Low-Voltage Design

Your licensed electrician is an expert at line-voltage work, and you absolutely need them. But low-voltage design for a smart home is a different discipline with different training and tools. Letting your electrician make decisions about access point placement, speaker locations, or network architecture often leads to a system that technically works but doesn't perform well.

Waiting Until After Drywall

This is the big one. Every item on this list becomes dramatically more expensive and complicated after the drywall is up. The prewire phase is when smart home wiring is fast, clean, and affordable. After drywall, it requires cutting, patching, painting, and compromises that would have been completely avoidable.
