The good folks at Cambridge Audio sent us (ListenUp) a Spira 1 turntable to audition. Due to the extraordinarily low price, I was especially interested to see how it would measure up from a build-quality standpoint. Before receiving the Spira 1, I was already impressed by its feature set. At an introductory price of $499, the combination of a built-in phono preamp and Bluetooth connectivity offers exceptional versatility for the money. My question was simple: To include all of those features at this price, what did Cambridge Audio have to sacrifice in the turntable itself? After unboxing the Spira 1, the answer pleasantly surprised me: not nearly as much as I expected. The first thing that stood out was the construction. The plinth feels substantially more solid, and the platter has noticeably more mass than what I typically expect from a turntable in this price range. In fact, from a purely physical build-quality standpoint, the Spira 1 is among the most substantial turntables I have encountered for under $600. That matters. With a turntable, the plinth and platter aren't merely cosmetic. A solid, well-damped foundation helps control unwanted vibration and resonance, allowing the cartridge and tonearm to retrieve more of the information contained in the record groove. Cambridge Audio has managed to combine the convenience modern listeners want, Bluetooth and an integrated phono stage, with the kind of substantial construction I look for in a serious turntable. Well done, Cambridge Audio!
