Modern Home Spaces: Residence in Greenwood Village, CO
March 12, 2021
This technology design project by ListenUp allows this Greenwood Village family to enjoy year-round fun with whole-house audio/video, TVs, speakers by the pool, and a home theater area complete with tiered seating.
When this ListenUp client and his family moved to the Denver area and bought a new home, he started doing some research to find a tech integrator that could handle the major job he had in mind. In this case, since the home is roughly 6,000 square feet and the family would be using smart devices to operate everything via a robust Control4 system, ListenUp did a major overhaul, with a new Pakedge router and Cisco switch to improve network coverage and Access Networks Ruckus wireless access points judiciously placed around the house. With this equipment in place, ListenUp can monitor, and in many cases diagnose and repair, any network issues without a service call to the home.
Several areas on all levels of the home had been pre-wired with existing speakers. To deliver streaming music services, Internet radio and more, ListenUp installed a Sonos Amp for each area, including the family room, kitchen, patio, master bedroom and exercise room. Using the new and improved Access Networks wireless access points, the family members can use either their smartphones, tablets or Control4 remotes to choose programming. In the living room is a wall-mounted 75-inch Sony 4K TV, which is flanked by two Leon Profile speakers custom built to match the exact height of the display. The Profiles use a unique driver array to create the front three channels of sound (left, center, right) from just two speaker cabinets. Theres a 55-inch Sony 4K TV in the office and gym, and a 65-inch model in the master bedroom, each accompanied by a Sonos Playbar for great sound.
The family was doing a big remodel of the basement and wanted the performance of a dedicated home theater, but with it open to the rest of the area. Sports and streaming content look spectacular on the 120-inch Screen Innovations screen, which is fed crystal-clear 4K Ultra HD images by a Sony projector. The screen is acoustically transparent with tiny perforations that allow sound to come through, which gave ListenUp the ability to place the Bowers & Wilkins CT Series speakers behind it just like in a real movie theater. Two REL subwoofers are mounted in the wall just below the screen to deliver dramatic deep bass. And six Bowers & Wilkins in-ceiling models serve as the surround and height speakers necessary for todays three-dimensional surround-sound formats, such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Processing and power are provided by an Arcam surround receiver and an NAD amplifier, while sources include an Apple TV and Sony Blu-ray player, both with 4K capability for the finest picture possible, as well as a cable box. Two rows of motorized Paliser theater recliners in black leather are tiered, so everyone has a great view of the screen. All the equipment is discreetly tucked away in the mechanical closet at the back of the room, and everything is operated through the Control4 control system, which is accessible via handheld remotes and apps on the familys smart devices for streamlined operation. And just to make sure no one misses any of the action, theres a small 28-inch TV mounted in the bar bathroom just above the keg-urinal.
The cabana features a 65-inch Sunbrite outdoor TV hung above the fireplace. Its wired via CAT-5 network connection to a Marantz surround receiver and cable box, which reside in the mechanical room with the theater equipment. Two pairs of Bowers & Wilkins weatherproof outdoor speakers deliver high performance sound, and an additional Control4 processor and remote were programmed to control this location.
The ListenUp crew installed a Sonance Sonarray landscape sound system, with one in-ground subwoofer and eight weatherproof satellite loudspeakers placed strategically in the planting beds around the pool area. A Sonos Port provides the source for streaming music into the matching Sonarray amplifier whose built-in equalizer allows adjustments of the sound to complement the environment. ListenUp also wired for and installed a 55-inch Sunbrite weatherproof TV on the outside of the new garage wall so it can be viewed from the hot tub.
