Inspired by its predecessor, the model 98, the Classic 99 exudes comfort and quality. With 32 mm thick cabinet walls, rich walnut veneer, and hand-fitted details, it features simple aluminum badges and radiused feet that give it a floating appearance. The down-firing 12” driver is powerful yet discreet, while the rear amplifier panel boasts period-correct detailing with controls finished in white gold. Every component, from the phase switch to the exterior finish, exudes quality. REL’s approach always starts with the driver, and the Classic 99 is no exception. It features a bespoke 12” long-stroke driver with a lightweight, stiff, hot-pressed paper cone and a hand-thrown paper center cap. This design ensures excellent self-damping and contributes to the quietness that allows for the most startling dynamics. The Classic 99 can play incredibly loud, but it’s the black background from which the dynamics emerge that provides the dramatic impact desired by composers and directors.
